Snorkeling and diving
A full-day snorkeling boat takes 7 to 8 hours with the hotel pickup. An introductory dive takes half a day. Two boat dives fill a day, and a beginner's Open Water course usually takes 3 to 4 days with theory and training dives. Divers also need a rest day with no diving before flying home (the usual guideline after several days of diving is at least 18 hours). That is why divers should plan 6 to 7 days.
Boat trips and desert evenings
Most boat trips take 6 to 8 hours including transfers, boarding and two or three swimming stops. A desert safari with quad bikes or a camel ride and a Bedouin dinner lasts 4 to 6 hours, usually from mid-afternoon to after dinner. One sea day and one desert evening fit easily into 4 to 5 days with time to rest in between.
Day trips
Each day trip needs a full day of its own. Dahab and the Blue Hole are about 1.5 hours away by road; Saint Catherine and Mount Sinai are about 3 hours away and are done as a night climb; Cairo and the pyramids need a flight or a very long road day. Add at least one day for each trip you want.

Day 4 is the flexible day: repeat the activity you liked best, take a glass-bottom boat with small children, or simply stay at the resort. - Sea, desert and a day trip: two sea days, one desert evening and one trip to Dahab or Saint Catherine, with free days in between.
- Slow and luxury holidays: spa time, long breakfasts and quiet evenings need space; a week lets you enjoy the resort instead of only sleeping in it.
Tiran Island and the Strait of Tiran reefs
The "Tiran Island" boat trip is, with Ras Mohamed, the classic sea day from Sharm El Sheikh. Tiran is an island at the entrance of the Gulf of Aqaba, about 5 to 6 km off the Sinai coast. Between the island and Sinai, four coral reefs, Jackson, Woodhouse, Thomas and Gordon, rise from deep water in the Strait of Tiran. These reefs are what you visit: boats moor beside them for snorkeling and diving, and the island itself stays in view on the horizon.
- Can you land on Tiran Island? Not on a boat trip: boats stay at the reefs. The island has no hotels, beaches or tourist facilities. It was administered by Egypt for decades and was part of Ras Mohamed National Park, but it passed to Saudi Arabia after Egypt's parliament approved the agreement in June 2017.
- What you see: reef walls with hard and soft coral, schools of reef fish, turtles at times and, in summer, hammerhead sharks in the deeper water near the reefs (for divers). The rusting wreck on Gordon Reef is a well-known landmark.
- The trip: boats leave from the marina in Sharm El Sheikh in the morning and return in the afternoon; the crossing to the reefs takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and the day has two or three stops and lunch on board. The strait can have current, so stay with the guide, and wear a life vest or fins if you are not a strong swimmer.
- Tiran or Ras Mohamed? If you have time for only one, choose Ras Mohamed for the most famous walls. If you have two sea days, do both: the reefs are different, and on windy days one is often calmer than the other.

What to expect on the Ras Mohamed boat
A full day with hotel pickup in the morning, two or three snorkeling stops on the reef walls of the national park, lunch on board, and in most trips a stop at White Island, a sandbank surrounded by shallow, clear water that is ideal for weaker swimmers. The sea is usually calmest in the morning; on windy days the captain chooses the sheltered sites.
What to do in Sharm El Sheikh at night
Evenings are part of the reason a stay of four or five days feels full, because most days end on the water by mid-afternoon. The main options:
- Naama Bay: the pedestrian promenade along the bay is the centre of Sharm's nightlife, with restaurants, cafes, shisha terraces and bars open late.
- SOHO Square: a lit-up entertainment square near Sharks Bay and Nabq with restaurants, shops, a dancing fountain and evening shows, easy with children.
- The Old Market: in Sharm El Maya, the old town, for bargaining in spice and souvenir shops and a simple Egyptian dinner in local restaurants; it is liveliest after sunset.
- The Heavenly Cathedral: the Coptic cathedral with painted ceilings is close to the Old Market area, so the two combine well in one late afternoon.
- A desert night: a Bedouin dinner and stargazing in the mountains behind the town, often combined with a sunset quad bike or camel ride.
Plan one or two evenings out and leave the others for the resort: after a full-day boat trip most guests are happy with an early night.

Sharm is a year-round destination. The sea is about 23 °C in January and 28 to 29 °C in August. October, November, March and April have the best balance of warm water and comfortable air; December to February is sunny but cooler, with chilly evenings and more wind on the boats; June to August is hot, around 33 to 37 °C by day, so plan sea trips in the morning and desert trips at sunset.
